If you’ve ever found yourself shopping for jewellery, you’ve probably heard the term ‘fine jewellery’ before. You’ve probably also heard of another type of jewellery called fashion jewellery, or costume jewellery. So, what is the difference between fine and fashion jewellery, and how do you know which is best?

What is fine jewellery?

The idea of fine jewellery is quite simple. Fine jewellery is any jewellery made from precious metals. Precious metals refer to genuine gold, sterling silver, or platinum. It may also include stones that are lovingly included in the piece from precious gemstones like diamonds or emeralds to sapphires, and rubies.

Our diamond collection showcases this perfectly.

Another point about fine jewellery is that it’s very durable and is made to last. This means it can be worn every day and can typically withstand everyday activities like bathing and exercise. Fine jewellery is also relatively easy to repair if a piece breaks and generally won’t tarnish if it’s cared for, cleaned, and stored properly.

What is fashion jewellery?

Usually made from base materials like brass, copper, and aluminium, fashion (or costume) jewellery is any piece that is not made from precious metals. Fashion jewellery can also include other forms of materials as well like textiles, clay, and leather. Sometimes, fashion jewellery is made from a base metal that is then plated with a precious metal like gold or silver.

If a piece of fashion jewellery includes any form of stone, they are usually stimulated or enhanced stones made from plastic, glass, cubic zirconia, or even crystals. Generally, the ‘gemstones’ found in fashion jewellery won’t be as precious.

Something to also consider is, because the metals used in fashion jewellery can’t withstand heat, a costume piece usually can’t be repaired if it breaks. Fashion jewellery can tarnish quickly and has little retained value.

The benefits of fine jewellery

Although it comes down to personal preference, we as passionate makers of fine jewellery believe that fine jewellery offers far more than Fashion Jewellery.

Our pieces are unique to the owner, telling their own personal story, holding deeper meaning and memories. This makes it the perfect heirloom that can be passed down to future generations. In contrast, fashion jewellery may come with a lower price tag, but it won’t last as long and will almost always need to be replaced at some point.

Our pieces of fine jewellery last many years and stay as beautiful as the day it was created. Shop our range on our website.
