Proper Jewellery Care and Cleaning

You’ve taken the time to carefully select jewellery that has been lovingly handmade and is unique. The uniqueness of bespoke jewellery is what makes it timeless. Generations to come will enjoy this precious heirloom, and by taking the proper care of your custom-made jewellery,  you’ll be ensuring the sentimental value remains intact, just as it was from the first day. 

Do’s and don'ts of jewellery care

Whilst we love being active, it's good to remove jewellery during exercise. Unfortunately, our body's sweat doesn't do precious metals any favours. Delicate chains can often become tangled, causing the links to weaken and tarnish or become dull. 

Swimming, in particular, can play havoc on jewellery. Over time, the chlorine used in swimming pools can cause your jewellery to become brittle. The same is valid for seawater and our sun’s UV rays which can cause sterling silver to tarnish and gold to become dull. 

This leads us to soaps, creams, lotions, perfume, hair products, nail varnish remover and other chemicals. Avoid wearing jewellery in the bath or shower. When applying creams, lotions or perfumes, allow them to dry or be fully absorbed beforehand. Avoid leaving your silver pieces, in particular, in the bathroom. The humidity can accelerate the oxidation process, resulting in your jewellery becoming tarnished. 

Do store your jewellery in its box and out of direct sunlight. You could get into the habit of putting your jewellery on last when you’re getting ready and removing it first when you’re going to bed. 

Do use a soft, non-abrasive cloth to keep your jewellery looking its best. Invest in a gold or silver cleaning cloth to get the best results.
